Delaware Center for Contemporary Art Call for Entires - due July 16, 2010

The Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts was created in 1979 by a group of artists who believed that a small industrial city on the East Coast could and should support contemporary art and artists. In addition to its curated solo and group exhibitions, the DCCA remains committed to providing artist members with solo exhibition opportunities in its changing galleries. A non-collecting museum housed in an industrial building that was previously a railroad car factory and sited in the growing Riverfront area in Wilmington, the DCCA functions as a kunsthalle for temporary exhibitions. Hundreds of artist members have shown new bodies of work made specifically for their solo shows at the DCCA as well as site-specific installations.

The proverbial white cube at the DCCA lends itself to the varieties of artistic vision, experimentation, engagement, and impetus from emerging, mid-career, and established artists. Artists working in all media are encouraged to apply for the opportunity to contribute to the DCCA efforts towards a widened, deepened, and strengthened forum for new ideas and new art.

School 33 Art Center Call for Entries for Solo Shows

ANNUAL CALL FOR MEMBERS’ GALLERY

Application Deadline Friday, June 18, 2010

School 33 is now accepting solo exhibition applications exclusively from artists who are Members of School 33 Art Center. Each selected exhibit will be approximately 6 to 8 weeks long and featured in the second floor 450 sq ft Members' Gallery at School 33 Art Center. Three to four artists will be selected as part of School 33's 2010-11 exhibition season beginning August 2010.

The Members' Gallery on the second floor of School 33 presents a diverse range of artwork by the Members of School 33. Exhibits and installations rotate frequently for the purpose of allowing access to as many artists as possible. The use of the Gallery as a project space, an incubator, and facilitator of new work is highly encouraged.

To apply for a solo show you must:

• Not have exhibited in a solo show at School 33 in the last two years.

2010 Axis Alley Art- Call for Entries and Participation

Axis Alley seeks through creative engagement to utilize the backyards of
vacant properties and vacant lots as a canvas for creative works that
transform, activate and revitalize the overlooked, under-attended areas of
Baltimore’s back alleys. In neighborhoods where the vacancy rate of
properties runs high, the alley seems to become the indicator of urban
difficulties… trash, rats, homeless people, prostitution and drugs. These
somewhat forbidding alley’s (dark and unlit at night), while speaking of
endemic problems in the city, possess a certain toxic beauty and provide a
fascinating possibility of urban intervention and creative gesture.

Axis Alley calls for proposals for site -specific temporary works to be
installed in the backyards of vacant properties that are alley-side behind
N.Calvert street in the blocks between 24th st and North avenue and possibly
extending in both North and South directions to re-activate the alley
connecting Station North to the BMA through creative works.

Works in all media and disciplines are encouraged to submit, but all works
should be highly site-specific. Works that utilize solar light as an
illumination device for a night presence are highly encouraged. Consider all
possibilities for activating the back facades, boarded window and doors, full
back yards, vacant lots and possibly the surface of the alley itself.
Projects that involve non-vacant properties such as collaborating with
property owners along the ‘route’, are also welcome. . This event will be
different in duration as many buildings are soon slated for either demolition
or development. Themes around ‘forms of remembrance, forgetting and imagining
the future’ are encouraged. Ephemeral and temporal works are encouraged such
as projections, performances and so forth.

I think this project sounds exciting and worthwhile. The Hexagon is stepping it up, is steadily working on an official non-profit status, and has a mission to create some excellent opportunities for local artists.

The Hexagon is a community run gallery and performance space in the Station North Arts Distric of Baltimore, Maryland. The focus of the space is to eliminate segregation in the community by providing a forum for collaboration between artists of diverse backgrounds, to mentor local arts organizers, and to provide educational public arts workshops. CALL FOR PRINTMAKERS:

The Hexagon Gallery is pleased to announce Hexchange, a Baltimore-themed portfolio exchange for emerging printmakers. Hexchange will be on exhibit during the month of October, with an opening reception on Saturday, October 10th, in conjunction with Second Saturdays, a new initiative from the Station North Arts & Entertainment District to bring community arts and music awareness to the area. Following the exhibition, Hexchange will become a part of the permanent collections at the Hexagon Gallery and the International Print Museum in Southern California (and possibly more). Hexchange is also receiving promotional support from the Bmore Art Blog, the Contemporary Museum and the Station North Arts & Entertainment District.

There are 50 spots in this portfolio. Hexchange will first open registration to Baltimore/DC printmakers (immediately). Starting on August 3rd, artists from outside the Baltimore/DC region can begin registration. All artists participating in the exchange will receive a portfolio of 50 different prints.

School 33 Art Center, a program of the Baltimore Office of Promotion and The Arts, invites artists to submit artwork for consideration for our annual fundraiser exhibition, LOTTA ART presented by Provident Bank. This annual lottery-style event raises funds for the support and growth of School 33, the renowned Baltimore arts institution that has championed the arts for nearly 30 years through exhibitions, studio space, and arts education.

School 33 is proud to announce several significant changes that have been made to this much anticipated event. These include a juried selection process, the ability to preview the selected artwork on School 33’s NEW website, and an all new venue at the award winning Silo Point complex.

To show our appreciation for your generous contribution of artwork, our selection committee will nominate three artists as “Best in Show”. Each of these three artists will be awarded a solo exhibition at School 33 Art Center during the 2009-10 exhibition season.

Additionally, ALL selected artists for LOTTA ART will receive:
* one free “patron” ticket for the April 25th fundraiser
* the opportunity to purchase an additional discounted “art “ ticket
* one year long membership to School 33

3. Image files should be titled exactly as follows and numbered corresponding to the image description sheet (last_first1.jpg; last_first1detail.jpg, etc.). Each image should be sized at least 72 dpi at approximately 1024 x 768 pixels.
4. Typed image description list including image number, title, materials, dimensions, and date completed. Please be sure to include artist’s name and contact information at the top of the page. Text files should be saved as Microsoft Word documents (last_first.doc)
5. Submissions MUST represent EXACT artwork available to donate for the LOTTA ART fundraiser.
6. All work must be securely framed and/or ready to hang or present.
7. Artists must make all necessary arrangements for the delivery and pick up of their artwork. See details below.
8. Your donation may be tax-deductible. Please consult your tax advisor for your individual circumstances.

DC Area Artists: Turn a Glass of Water into Something Beautiful

The lack of clean drinking water is the second largest worldwide killer of children under five. To address this crisis, UNICEF launched the Tap Project-a nationwide campaign to bring clean water to children around the world. During World Water Week (March 22 - March 28, 2009) participating DC area restaurants will encourage patrons to donate $1 or more for the tap water they usually enjoy for free. Every dollar raised provides a child with clean drinking water for 40 days.

Tap DC is asking local artists of all levels and mediums to participate in a large-scale public art project to promote World Water Week in our city. We're calling for paintings, portraits, photography, sculpture, poetry, music and other works of art that portray a glass of water-something most of us take for granted-as something beautiful. Selected works will be displayed in print, outdoor and television advertising; in a gallery exhibition; and online at TapDC.org. Click here for a template PDF that we hope you will use as your canvas, along with background information PDF and instructions for art submissions.

To have your work considered for advertising, submissions must be received no later than February 6, 2009. New Artscape exhibitions to apply for:
Baltimore Sculpture Project - Deadline: March 20. Outdoor sculpture exhibition that will include the Artscape site and some select sites around the city.

Midway II - Deadline: March 6. For the second year artists will be commissioned to produce installations and/or performances in 8x8 spaces at this site specific exhibition. Rebecca Nagle, Vince Peranio, Carly Ptak, Kaitlin Murphy and Evan Moritz will be curating.

Midway II Façade Design Competition - Deadline: March 6. This year we are looking for designers or artists who will design and fabricate the façade elements for the Midway.

16^th Annual Art Car Show and Art Car CARavan/Parade. Harrod Blank will be back as the curator for this year’s car show. Deadline: March 20.

BALTIMORE INFILL SURVEY

Sections of Baltimore City (ie vacant lots and buildings) represent a huge and flexible resource for new and innovative reanimation. The Baltimore Infill Survey is a Flickr-based site that has been set up as a forum to discuss how this resource may be used. You are invited to participate in this discussion. Just download the image at http://www.flickr.com/photos/baltimoreinfillsurvey/ and alter it with a possible vision for how these spaces can be used again. Any and all ideas from the very practical to the purely hypothetical are encouraged.

The photograph is of a middle of the block site (no longer existent as pictured) including occupied and vacant homes and vacant lots. The space between the buildings is approximately 85 feet (6 house widths). After you have modified your image just send it with any accompanying text to gkachadourian@promotionandarts.com. Your image and the accompanying text will be posted.

This is an ad hoc project that is being coordinated under the auspices of the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts and the Baltimore Design Conversation.

In addition to the countless plans of the past, a plethora of plans has been created by/for Baltimore recently, including the Charles North Vision Plan, the Pratt Street Concept Development Plan, the Middle Branch Master Plan, the Sustainability Plan, the Bicycle Master Plan, One Park, etc.

BALTIMORE DESIGN CONVERSATIONS #5: What's Your Plan?

What happens to these plans after they've been created? Why were they created in the first place? How can we improve the process of engaging everyone in the planning process? Do you have your own master plan ideas that you'd like to share?
